Which Virginia Office Holds the Record?
Virginia has no single statewide jail desk for local bookings. The arresting agency, sheriff, or jail serving the place of arrest is the first contact for a county or city booking record. Use the official route that matches the record type:
- Local arrest or booking: find the county or independent city in the County Directory, then use that locality's official sheriff, police, jail, or regional-jail source. Local systems vary, and a roster may show current custody without a booking photo.
- Existing booking record or photo: the statewide records guide explains how to identify the custodian and make a focused request. Virginia FOIA is in Va. Code § 2.2-3700; response and cost rules appear in § 2.2-3704. The request goes to the public body that holds the existing record.
- State prison custody or supervision: search the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. Its roster covers state custody and supervision; its current public results do not show a general offender photograph. For an existing VADOC record, use the department's FOIA request route.
- Warrant or wanted-person question: start with the Most Wanted guide, then confirm with the issuing court or law-enforcement agency. The Virginia State Police Wanted Persons page is a statewide official list, but entries can change.
- Court case or disposition: use the Virginia Courts case-information portal to reach the relevant court system. The court record, rather than a booking page, shows later case events.
- Federal custody: check the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator or ICE detainee locator. The BOP locator does not provide a public booking-photo field, and neither federal locator replaces a Virginia local jail source.
